THIRTEEN

The next morning felt hectic and frenzied, but that was mostly because I wanted to get a move-on. Hannah actually woke up first and she woke me up by pushing me on my back, climbing on top of me, and riding me until we both came.

After that, I woke up Melanie by crawling into bed with her, and she accepted me eagerly if groggily.

After we screwed like rabbits, I got up, washed, dressed, and ate a quick breakfast.

“Chris,” Melanie said, sitting up in her bed as we gathered our things, getting ready to head out.

“Yeah?” I replied, looking at her.

She looked anxious. “What do you think, about Pine Lake? What are our chances?”

I hesitated. I hadn’t expected to see a look of such genuine concern on her face. Normally she was so firm and confident, it actually sent a shiver of dread through me that made my own confidence slip just a little.

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “Short term, we’re rolling the dice here. Hopefully we’ll find the cache and somehow manage to get it back and that’ll buy us a few months. Long term?...I don’t know, I think we’re just going to have to move. The setup we had when I left was stable, but not precisely what I’d call ideal. I mean, not for like a small society meant to last. Those trees aren’t going to last forever. They aren’t growing back because they’re all dead. We need to find a place with more renewable resources, or vaster resources. God, a coal mine would be amazing. Somewhere safe we could set up some big hydroponic gardens, too? Maybe some solar panels. I found a few of those out there, actually. Places like that have to exist, but how to find them?”

“You really think we could move the whole town, everyone?” Hannah asked.

“It’s possible. It’s doable. Just tough,” I replied. I went back to lacing my boots up nice and tight, then stood and pulled on my backpack and my rifle and my SMG. “We have to go, Melanie. I want to catch up with Megan as soon as I can.”

“All right,” she said, and got to her feet. She came over and gave me a hug and a kiss, then shook hands with Hannah. “It was good to meet you. I’m glad you’re involved, you seem like a great person. Good luck out there. I’m going to stay here and keep helping them out, keep trying to talk them into maybe coming back to Pine Lake. I think Lisa would welcome the help.”

I paused, considering it. “You know, maybe we could set up an outpost here and hunt and send food back to Pine Lake as a lifeline to help extend our timeline. Talk to them about that. I’ll be back with Megan and the others as soon as we’ve figured the rest of this stuff out.”

“I will, and I’ll be waiting for your return,” Melanie replied.

We shared another kiss and then Hannah and I were out the door.
